6th Summer Institute (SI-6) for New Global Health Researchers

Frequently Asked Questions

1. I do not have a research dyad partner? How can I find one?

While it’s best that you have an already-established partnership, we do offer several avenues through which you can find a research partner.

  • Firstly, please have a look through the Member Profiles on our website (http://ccghr.ca/default.cfm?content=membership&lang=e&subnav=membership). Members are divided by region and the profiles include short biographies, area of work, and research interests. Email addresses are included on all member profiles, so please go ahead and introduce yourself via email to a new potential partner. Only members can access these profiles (please see below about becoming a member).
  • The CCGHR website also offers a “Partnership Exchange Board”. This is a tool through which you can post messages describing the type of research you do and what kind of partner you might be looking for. Again, you must be a Coalition member to access this service. http://ccghr.ca/default.cfm?content=membership&lang=e&subnav=membership
  • If you continue to have trouble finding a partner, please send an email to us at the Coalition with your name, country, area of research, and affiliation, and we will do our best to match you with a potential partner. Please send this inquiry to: ccghr@ccghr.ca

2. Do I have to be a member of the CCGHR to attend SI-6?

Yes, we require that you become a member in order to receive support to attend. Membership is free and easy- just go to www.ccghr.ca and click on the memberships button on the home page to fill out a membership form. We encourage all applicants to become members to ensure that you receive the latest CCGHR updates.

3. If my application is successful, is my travel and participation paid for by the CCGHR?

The CCGHR will fully support participant travel, accommodation, meals and cost of VISA’s. We will make all arrangements for travel, accommodation and meals, and will help you to acquire your VISA if necessary.

If you are selected to attend the Summer Institute, you will receive a detailed letter from the CCGHR staff outlining logistical and travel details.

4. This is the first Francophone Summer Institute. What level of French do I need to be eligible?

We require that at least one dyad partner have demonstrated competency in French and be willing to provide language support to their partner if needed. We are unable to guarantee simultaneous translation services on site. As the working language will be French, participants with competency in the language will benefit most from attending SI-6.

5. Are all dyads required to by composed of one Canadian and one LMIC researcher?

When ranking applications for SI-6, preference will be given to 'dyads' where one member is from Canada and the other is from a low or middle- income country. However, consideration will also be given to dyads where one member is from Canada and the other researcher is a member of an Indigenous community within a rich country.

6. I am interested in the Summer Institute, but would only be able to attend part of it. Could I come for just a few days?

We require a full commitment to the whole institute by participants. We cannot accommodate participants who are unable to fully participate.

7. How are applications reviewed? What makes a successful dyad?

The applications are reviewed by teams of peer reviewers who rate applications according to certain criteria. Criteria include but are not limited to the strength and nature of dyad partnerships, the quality and phase of development of the research project, the background and experience of the dyad partners, and the level of experience in and understanding of the theme and sub-themes.
