The Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is an independent, non-profit organization registered in Tanzania and led by Tanzanians. It conducts a wide range of health-related research including biomedical and environmental studies, clinical trials, health systems research and monitoring and evaluation. It also invests in training and now graduates about 10 PhD candidates annually, along with training other graduate students. In 2013, IHI scientists authored over 90 articles published in international peer-reviewed journals. The Institute depends on competitive research grants for 80% of its income, supplemented by core funding from the Governments of Tanzania, Switzerland, UK, Ireland and Norway.

Grand Challenges Canada (GCC) Tanzania Innovators

GCC has funded quite a number of Tanzanians who have been awarded grants to test health-related innovations (and in some cases, “scale up” these innovations).  Canada-funded researchers and research groups might be interested to learn about the work of these Tanzania “innovators”. Details about these projects include a brief video of each project. The list of innovators can be found by going to the GCC innovator database—click [here]To see the full list of Tanzanian (and some other “non-Canadian”) innovators supported by GCC, go to “implementation country” and click on Tanzania.
