7th Summer Institute for New Global Health Researchers (SI-7)
Universidad Andina Simon Bolivar (UASB)
Quito, Ecuador
July 4 -12, 2010
The Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research (CCGHR) is pleased to announce the 7th annual Summer Institute for researchers who are new to the field of global health research. This year’s Summer Institute is being hosted by the Universidad Andina Simon Bolivar (UASB) in Ecuador.
Guidelines
A limited number of spaces are available for “dyads” or pairs of researchers on the same project or team where one is from a low- or middle-income country (LMIC) and one is from Canada. SI-7 is intended to promote LMIC-Canada partnerships in addressing specific health research challenges including, but not limited to, equity and health, the Social Determinants of Health, ensuring ethical standards are met [e.g., collective consent with respect to knowledge that is communally endowed], knowledge translation and exchange. Participants will be expected to develop specific solutions, research proposals and implementation plans in the context of an on-going research to action project or program by the end of the institute. The program will include presentations on specific aspects of research on social determinants of health in the Andina region, Small group work (in “dyads” or in other issue-specific working groups) supported by facilitators and resource persons, and access to relevant readings and other resource materials. We are pleased to announce that SI-7 will be the first Summer Institute to be held in English and Spanish.
Goals
- To explore the social determinants of health in the Latin American context, including how research—both the production and use of knowledge—can lead to improved determinants and ultimately health outcomes;
- To learn about, acquire and strengthen catalyst competencies that are critical to global health research and to a fuller understanding of the social determinants’ framework; and
- To develop and/or strengthen research partnerships from “the South” and from Canada, through the development of joint “research to action” plans.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be part of a “dyad” or “triad” research team that is associated with a specific research project or program that includes one researcher from Canada, and one from a low- or middle-income country. In the case of a triad, this will include two LMIC individuals and one Canadian; one of the LMIC participants could be a “knowledge user”—such as a program manager, community leader or policy maker.
- Jointly submit the application and be at an early implementation phase (rather than just at the conceptualization stage).
- Be currently enrolled in post graduate studies in the health sciences or related disciplines (economics, law, geography, etc.) or a PhD or post-doctoral fellowship program that includes explicit training in health research methods, or have recently embarked upon a career in global health research.
- Have demonstrated interests in global health research and its application to the health and health system problems of LMICs.
- Be Canadian citizens or have landed immigrant status (Canadian member of dyad) and be associated with a specific institution or organization in their country of origin (LMIC member of dyad).
- One member of the team must be competent in Spanish and English, with the ability to understand both spoken languages, critically engage with material (spoken or written) presented in either language and, if necessary to be willing and able to support their partner(s) ability to comprehend proceedings.
- Be committed to participate in a pre-institute electronic dialogue, attend the entire institute, and participate in post-institute follow-up activities for up to 12 months.
Participants selected for the 7th Summer Institute for New Global Health Researchers will be posted on the CCGHR website by April 19th.
