Description:
“The African Women's Development Fund (AWDF), which was established in June 2000, is the first Africa-wide fundraising and grant-making fund, which aims to support the work of organisations working to promote women’s rights in Africa. The AWDF funds local, national, sub-regional and regional organisations in Africa working towards women’s empowerment.”
Eligibility:
You must be an African organization that prioritises certain areas depending on which of the Fund’s thematic priorities your project corresponds with. The Fund has different levels of granting programs (Main Grants Program, Small Grants Program – Ghana, the Solidarity Fund, HIV/AIDS Fund), each with their own eligibility criteria.
Specific focus on global health research?
No, but Health, Reproductive Rights and HIV/AIDS is one of the Fund’s thematic priorities, and research projects are eligible for funding.
Application Process:
Please submit a proposal that includes the following information: contact information, organizational information, structure, activities and/or programs, financial situation, grant request Information, most recent annual report and financial statement, and brochures/leaflets that describe your organization’s work. (Please see the Grant Application Guidelines (below) for full details about these components.) In addition to a fax or email application submission, please also submit a hard copy to the address below.

The Fund accepts applications throughout the year – there are three grantmaking cycles each year.
