These programs are aimed specifically at AIDS research around the world.
Application Process:
- AMFAR periodically releases a request for proposals to which researchers from any country may apply
- these proposals are in different areas, for example, recent proposals were in the area of microbicides or mucosal HIV transmission
- generally, AMFAR identifies a number of target areas for which they would like to see continuing research
- the first step is to submit a letter of intent to AMFAR
- letters of intent are reviewed on 1) scientific merit; 2) degree of innovation; 3) relevance of the research for AIDS patients; 4) qualifications of the investigator; 5) available facilities and 6) likelihood of success
- each letter of intent is reviewed by 12 to 20 researchers in the field of AIDS and awarded points, successful candidates are invited to submit full applications
